I wrote this while trying to prepare a talk for our new ward back in April or May. I decided to put it on here just because other people said they could relate. I know, I'm a nerd!
An Average Day in the Life of an LDS Mom
I’m sleeping so nice, after waking up twice,
And I’m hoping to snooze here in bed
I hear someone whining…and I groan-
As I’m hit with a sippy on the head.
I slowly get up at my toddlers’ commands,
And go to the fridge for a drink
It’s not a great start to a long day ahead
And I shudder as I look at my sink!
So much to do and not sure where to start
I’ll do what I should! I’ll pray from my heart!
I run in my room and drop to my knees,
Ready to pray, “Oh help me please!”
I close my eyes and start to begin,
“Dear Heavenly Father”- Then someone bursts in
I need to go and save some lives,
My boy’s on the counter, by the drawer with the knives.
Oh well… I guess I’ll pray from my heart…
Maybe at naptime I’ll get a fresh start
I get on with my day and wash some clothes
And try to pick up and wipe a nose
I really want to do what’s right!
I sit down with my scriptures and turn on a light.
Today I will study! I will feast on the word!
I open my book. “I Nephi…” And then I heard,
“Brother’s in the bathroom, making a mess,
He’s wearing your makeup and eating the rest!”
I jump up reluctantly to survey the harm
What I find brings me alarm
One’s in the sink and one’s by the toilet,
Their toy’s in there, I guess I’ll boil it
I have to clean up, I’m expecting some company.
The floor needs vacuumed and I’m looking frumpy.
The doorbell it rings and I’m in my sweats,
Can’t anyone come when I’m looking my best?
My kids are undressed and my hair’s all whirly,
It’s my visiting teachers….1 hour early!
Then the sisters leave and I close the door,
I realize I need to do some more!
I turn on the computer and go to New Family Search
I’ll figure this out! I’ll serve the church!
I get excited! I’ll spend an hour!
Then a little finger creeps up… and turns off the power.
I get up. After all, someone’s yelling,
And I need to figure out what’s causing the smelling
I settle them down with a book and some food,
I need to exercise, but I’m not in the mood.
What’s for dinner? I ask. I want something healthy!
I look in my cupboards. Hmmm…Peanut Butter and Jelly.
I run into the shower and I have to hurry
Will the kids be okay? I kind of worry
I wash out my hair and scrub my back
I’m outta there in two seconds flat!
I’m in my bathrobe and I check on my buddies,
What?! They’re outside? In their diapers? And muddy?
I think I’m hitting the end of my rope!
I’ve had it today? Can I even cope?
So much to do, so little time
I have dreams too- what about mine?
I want to be good and go to the temple
Have family home evening- it sounds pretty simple
And try new things and gain some knowledge
Study some books and take some more college
But I have bills to pay and a hard-working honey
Fancy things would be nice, but there’s not enough money
Why did I choose this? I think and I ponder
So many choices, and paths to wander.
I could do anything- serve humanity!
But I chose a world sometimes full of insanity.
I could get compliments and impress with my fame
Wear designer clothes and they’d know my name
I could travel and party and go to a spa
And eat fancy meals and have fish… raw!
It can be hard, but I chose this life
There’s nothing like being a Mom and a wife
And my home is not perfect and neither’s my hair,
But because I TRY the spirit is there
I serve and I grow and I strive for balance
I find joy where I can and I develop my talents
I keep my promises and my tithing is paid
The Lord will bless me and come to my aid
When all’s said and done, I’ll be glad to be me
Glad I was the person I needed to be.
And there’s women who see us and mock at our choices
Women who belittle with their worldly voices
Well when this life is over they can’t take their things
Their sports cars, their shoes, their coats and their rings.
But we’ll have our families, our kids and our joys.
They’ll regret they spent their whole life on their toys.
There are times as a mother I feel of my mission,
It’s more than diapers and cleaning the kitchen
It’s training up spirits of Heavenly Father,
A task I am honored to do as His daughter.
There are sacrifices to make but time will tell,
When he looks at our family and says we did well.
“You’ve fulfilled your purpose all together,
Now come dwell with me and live forever.”
